In thinking about the issues above I realised that I probably DO hold fanfiction to a higher standard than canon, myself. Canon plots often bounce lightly over the emotional, ethical and human implications of the events in the episodes and the best fanfiction explores all that. And it takes characterisation to a much deeper level.
