Sunday snippet

I've been making nice progress on my current silly story. (Quick recap: Technically original fiction but written fanfic-style, even though the "canon" it's playing with exists only in my head; magical-age-regression-in-non-magical-setting plot.) It helps that I've been able to stick with the approach that this is just a very rough first draft, so it doesn't matter if transitions are rough or certain things don't flow right yet.

Then again, a coworker decided to bring his sickness to a recent in-person meeting, and I seem to have caught whatever he has even though I was very careful not to get too close or (I thought) touch anything he did. It's a minor annoyance, but it's just enough so that I've finally gone ahead and taken an antihistamine. So I'll probably pass out soon and sleep through to Tuesday.
The kitchen is soon its usual morning chaos, particularly once Sarah starts feeding the cats. Jon's mood is casting a definite pall over the room, though. Then Katie happens to glance over in a particularly noisy moment to see him eyeing the door and makes an executive decision.

"Emma, what's your first class, and can you miss it?"

Emma stares at her for a few seconds, which is fair, because this never happens. "We just started," she says finally. "I can miss it."

That's not really a proper answer, but Katie decides that she doesn't need to know right now. "Okay. I'll take you in later. Go show Jon the internet."

Emma giggles.

"Keep it clean, okay?" In theory, she doesn't have an option, but Katie knows teenagers are smarter than most parental tools. Emma's not likely to get too far in the weeds, but it's still worth saying. "Stick to nice stuff."

"Oh. You're serious?" Emma considers this for several seconds and then grins hugely. She goes over to Jon and starts pulling him to the dining room; after a measuring glance at Katie, he goes along. "I am going to show you so many cat videos." Emma adores Jon and will stick to him like a particularly affectionate burr, so that's one problem at least deferred.
