Your Red Sox: Now with reflexive Curse action!

The Red Sox finally broke "The Curse" in 2004. Maybe they miss being special: I think they've just instituted a new one on themselves.

The White Sox took it all in 2005. The Red Sox were playing them today, in the last game before the All Star Break. The game went into extra innings when the White Sox tied the score in the bottom of the ninth. I wasn't too worried about that personally, in terms of missing game action, because I always set up my ballgame recordings to run an extra two hours (the maximum allowed overrun on my DVR). The Red Sox really aren't a three-hour-game team.

But as we went into the 11th inning, I turned to [livejournal.com profile] violetcheetah and made the following prediction:

The Red Sox had had several chances to pull ahead throughout the game, but they didn't. Instead, they were going deep, wearing out themselves and the White Sox right before the All Star Game. Since the White Sox won last year, their manager (Ozzie "Trash Talk" Guillen) is the manager of the American League side of the ASG. Guillen has filled pretty much every discretionary slot with his own players. Being exhausted, these players will cause the American League to lose the ASG. This means that the National League team will have home field advantage in the World Series.

And the Red Sox, currently leading their division, have a very good shot of making it into the World Series this year. So by refusing to win or even lose promptly, they've cursed themselves with a disadvantage for the Series!

That's my prediction, and I'm sticking to it.

(My five-hour recording gave out halfway through the bottom of the 14th inning. The game went 19 innings total, with an official time of 6h 14m. That's basically two entire games in one!)
