SGA Drabble: Elizabeth, Interrupted
Just a quick drabble, inspired by the comments at ![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
bratfarrar's slightly AU drabble on the same topic.
Title: Elizabeth, Interrupted
Spoilers/Timeline: Tag to 1x15 "Before I Sleep"

It takes Elizabeth a while to see what Janus's plan really meant. When she does, she wishes she hadn't.
Her other self, her first self, stepping into stasis when slightly younger than Elizabeth is now. Her other self emerging only twice — only long enough to rotate the ZPMs — before she was found by the current expedition, her body aging slowly and her mind unaware.
Her other self, aging from vitality to near-death in a period of subjective time that could be measured in minutes.
She hopes her other self never truly understood the Wraith, because the irony could cut glass.

I found the original Elizabeth's fate incredibly depressing when I watched the ep; worse than other characters' deaths, like watching Gronin getting blown up witin seconds on the satellite. Wasting away and giving your life up for your other self... a terrible fate.

I find I can't really think too much about the timeline-sacrificial characters — Elizabeth here and Rodney in late season four especially, without getting really depressed. Their compatriots (John and the others in the jumper with Elizabeth, as well as all who drowned; Jennifer with Rodney, as well as all those who died in those desperate battles) died before their time, but the two of them acted to set things right ... but their lives were spent, wasted, leaving them perfectly aware that someone else would get "their" lives. Until they died, they were still left with all the pain that got them where they were; it was "undone" in the sense that a new timeline was spawned, but for them it still happened, and ... ::sniff!::

ETA: Not meaning to make it all about me, of course. I was actually kind of glad about where you took the alt-timeline characters (especially after we discussed them) in your "Desperate Measures", just because I'd hate to picture what the alternative would be like for them, you know? (Being all vague so as not to spoil others.) And I think even that closure for that John about his Rodney, awful as it was for him, is better than not knowing would have been.

I find myself thinking a lot about things like timelines and AU. I've always found the concept of time-travel fascinating. And whenever there's a fix of the timeline in canon I'm always wondering what happens to the other timeline... does it disappear, never to have existed, or did they just create an AU that branches off the original timeline, that keeps existing... (and often it's a quite miserable existance, otherwise there wouldn't have been the need to fix it.) I think ultimately the multiple universe approach comes with less paradoxa. ;)
Have you watched SG-1? I once read an interesting fic that took place in the AU from the ep 2010, which continued to exist after the timeline was changed at a point in their past (our present). Even more possibility for fic, in the end. Which is good. :)
But yeah, I can't dwell too much on what happened to those characters like Rodney in Last Man, who gave themselves up for a future that's not theirs. At least Rodney still had Jeannie.

I've seen a lot of SG-1 but not all of it; I've read about 2010 but not yet seen it. One of these days. Along with the SGA rewatch, and getting into Farscape, and ... ::sigh::
But yeah, I think not dwelling is the real key.

Hah. Yeah, same here. I actually have the first season of Farscape here, borrowed from a friend, but I haven't even taken a peek. People keep reccing the show, and I'm interested because Claudia Black is in it (I adore Vala). But I'm also rewatching SGA and catching up on SG-1 and that's a lot of eps to watch. :)
I know large parts of the later seasons of SG-1 already so now I'm catching up on the beginnings. I gotta say, when old-time fans say that the first four seasons were the best, and then it went all downhill - I don't see it. So far I like the later episodes better, but then I'm only halfway through season 1, I guess the show was still finding its stride. It's not bad at all, but still a bit of a bumpy ride...
I never got into SG-1 to the same degree as SGA but 2010 was one of the eps that really caught my attention and sucked me in. Total plot kink of mine, that.
