Quick takes, March 2024

Life fell on my head pretty hard mid-January, but I'm finally digging back out. (Key events:
My father died suddenly, one day after having assured me over the phone that he was okay, despite the county-provided "cleaning" service having had to call the police because he'd fallen and couldn't open the door.  We weren't close, emotionally or geographically, but I was all he had for internet access and I kept tabs on him.  I had agreed to place his dog and settle his house, so that meant a lot of panicked travel and dealings.  My Gonzo cat had been unwell that week, and he declined to the point that I took him to the vet Saturday while having a flight out booked on Sunday.  We ended up putting him to sleep at that appointment.  I'd had him for 17.5 years, since he was just a few weeks old, and I miss him badly.  I got the dog accepted by the local Humane Society, and I think I now have everything else as sorted-out as it can be.  Now I'm trying to catch up on 20 years of deferred home maintenance, possibly with an associated renovation, but all that is next.
)

I'm not entirely certain what media I've consumed since my last post, but here are things I do remember:

Disney+: Tangled: I'd seen it before, but it and its following series got discussed online, so I rewatched the movie and then followed up with all the associated shorts and the series.  Not perfect, but entertaining and well done, with more depth than I think is typical for a tie-in.

Disney+: Lilo & Stitch: A couple of character moments made no sense to me, but I'm glad to have watched it.  I don't see being fannish or going through the associated media, though.

YouTube: Nimona: I had followed the webcomic back in the day and remembered it only vaguely, which was for the best, because the movie made some key changes.  I think the adaptations made it work really well as a movie, and I really enjoyed just about everything to do with it.  I'm glad Netflix put this out for easy, free viewing.

Disney+: Hamilton:  AT LONG LAST!  I've finally seen it!  I had been a bit nervous because the last filmed stage production I'd seen was "Allegiance", which I wanted to like ... but I specifically chafed at the stage conventions.  I thought that meant that theater productions were, generally, not to my taste, which would be pretty funny considering how very many of my friends are connected to theater.  I had a little trouble getting into the rhythms of Hamilton, since it starts a lot more choppy than Miranda's later work for Disney animation, but it won me over pretty quickly.  Quite enjoyable.

Kingfisher: Paladin's Faith: I enjoy these books a lot.  Formulaic, but that's what I'm there for.  I really, really appreciated the dig-a-latrine analogy.  I have a fondness for the character who purposely played the role of a jerk and kind of want to see him get a redemption, heh.  Cool worldbuilding -- I did not expect that resolution! nor those ... theological??? ... developments!  Wren!  Wisdom! Judith!!  Really looking forward to where this series is going.

I'm so sorry you went through all that. I know wrapping up the dangling threads of a life is hard, even when you're not close - harder yet when your usual emotional support and companion who could help comfort you is also gone. I hope you can take some quiet time for yourself now.

My condolences for your loss. All the best and lots of energy for dealing with the aftermath.

Putting the T. Kingfisher series on my to-read list :)
