Sunday snippet

I very nearly forgot to do this today, even though I was looking forward to it yesterday!

I have lots of options for passages I like, since I'm up to about 27.5k words in this story so far. I did find one paragraph that is exactly six sentences, but ... that's so short! So I'm going with this bit instead.

There's some kind of dressing on the detective's salad, too, but Jonathan is too stuck wondering why there's fruit in a salad to ask about that.

She seems happy with it, though, so he dismisses the question and unwraps his sandwich. He spreads the wrapper out on his lap to act as a napkin and murmurs grace. Then he takes a bite of the sandwich and freezes.

He probably should have asked what was in his food first.

"Ah. Right," the detective says. "Fusion's an acquired taste." She laughs tiredly. "And you haven't acquired it yet. Sorry about that, Ja-- Jonathan. I wasn't really thinking. We can get you something else."

Jonathan makes himself chew and swallow. "No, it's okay. I was just surprised." Who puts avocado on a sandwich? It's honestly kind of gross, but he doesn't think it will actually make him sick, and he's not about to waste food. It's his fault anyway, for not wanting to bother with helping her choose and order food. And he definitely doesn't want her to have to spend even more on him.

She's watching to be sure he's okay, so he's careful not to react to the taste or texture. He can just eat quickly and get it over with.
