Idle question for genfic fans

I thought about making this a poll, but I'm too lazy.

I'm involved in a few (a very few) cross-fandom comms, and in a recent discussion, multiple people asked where they could find more genfic.

We have the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] stargategenrec comm for the Stargate 'verse, of course, and its sister comm [livejournal.com profile] psychgenrec for Psych. (Thank you for those, [livejournal.com profile] sgatazmy!) We also periodically get recs for gen as a category in [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec, and of course we have quite a lovely group of writers producing and reccing more gen. We're lucky, in SGA; genfic might be in the minority but it's still represented.

Would anyone have use for a polyfandom genfic comm? This would be for announcements of new fic (and possibly art/vids/icons). Rec postings might also be encouraged, depending on traffic and interest. Searches could also be permitted. Tagging would have to be in use, helping track fandoms at a minimum. Guidelines would provide the format for posting, including how to handle borderline-gen questions or background pairings.

The comm would not condone bashing of slash or het fic; the point would be to promote genfic and allow folks a place to find it when they're in the mood, not take up sides.

Good idea? Nice but unnecessary? I don't really need a new project, but at the same time, if launching a new comm and setting up its guidelines would really fill a need, I'd be willing. So if you think it would be redundant or unnecessary, please feel free to say so ... but if you'd actively use it, please let me know that, too.

ETA: I went for it. If gen's your thing, check out [livejournal.com profile] polyfandom_gen.

I'd use that comm. At the moment, I post my genfic on a variety of fandom-specific comms, but I don't know of any polyfannish gen comms. I think there's a niche there.

Thanks for letting me know. It is tempting. It's only as much work as I make it (though of course it's only as much quality as I give it). Pondering ....

Hmmm. I'm in favor for more gen, although I enjoy slash and het in equal measures, provided it's well written. I'm probably more likely to use the fandom specific rec site though.

Thanks for letting me know. I figured that would be the case, especially in SGA fandom ... which, considering it's my only fandom, is the most heavily represented one in my flist.

I may go ahead; it's not like a comm costs anything unless you want to avoid inflicting ads or potential malware on users. Or something. ::gives LJ a dirty look::

I love it when you talk all jargony.

It makes me feel like I'm not such an outlier. Goodness knows I use enough puzzle and Judaism jargon in my own blog!

It's like the "interests" version of multilingualism: Venn diagrams ahoy!

Hey, baby, did you catch those OT4 recs over at that genre search? That one meta fic is just begging for a remix!

Or something.

(Of course, we share a jargon set, too: "LSC ...?")

Interesting idea. Recently I've started to browse around a little for FMA fic on top of my SGA reading, and I was wishing for a pointer to the gen stuff. I've had a hard time finding the kind of fic I'm interested in - in SGA I never encountered that problem. I'd probably join that comm (provided it not only doesn't condone bashing of slash and het, but also bashing of characters and actors.)

[identity profile] michelel72.livejournal.com 2010-03-06 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I thought about saying that, too, but I'm not sure where to draw the line. If someone writes a fic that includes character/actor bashing, should it be excluded from the noticeboard function? I wouldn't want to refine it too stringently, though I do appreciate the restrictions on bashing in the SGA search comms.

If searches and recs had a guideline of no bashing, and if posters were asked to "warn" for bashing in the headers for announced works, would that work, do you think?

I'd definitely be interested. What's funny is I made a suggestion for a one-fandom gen-only community on an earlier board, but this would work just as well.

Cool! Interesting timing — I just finished creating [livejournal.com profile] polyfandom_gen. Please check it out and, if you like what you see, feel free to join. It's brand-new, so there's no content yet, but I hope to change that ....
