In Xanadu ...
14 November 2006 10:46 amThe other night we had finished watching something on TV. Neither of us wanted to watch anything saved on the DVR (dark mysteries or the intellectual challenge of The Daily Show), so I browsed through the free movies in the "On Demand" section. The very last listed movie was Xanadu. (Comcast's description called it "the Moulin Rouge of 1980".)
I used to love that movie! It would be perfect -- light, inconsequential, fun ... free. So I selected it.
What I remembered accurately: Olivia Newton-John; roller skates; neon.
What I had forgotten or misremembered: Everything else.
I think I must only ever have seen the trailer or something. Not one second of the movie felt familiar. And it was bad. Ludicrous "character" "development", bad dialogue, hysterically bad plotting, cheesy effects, interminable dance sequences ... there was nothing to like. There really wasn't even much to snark. I just watched the whole thing, stunned by its badness.
So yet another fond memory goes down in flames. That's why I'm rarely tempted to rewatch shows and movies from my childhood -- back then, I clearly had no judgment, discernment, or taste. I shudder at the prospect of confronting some of those programs again. I mean, I used to watch Knight Rider, people!
